Dungeon Server — 8-Bit Dungeon Crawler Inside a Filesystem
About this game
Dungeon Server is a free online 8-bit dungeon crawler with one idea running through every part of it: the dungeon is a filesystem. Every room is a directory — you start in /, and you have to fight your way through /tmp, /var/log, /usr/bin, /dev, /proc and /etc to reach /boot. Every monster is a running process with a real name and a real memory footprint printed above its head, and this is where the game stops being a theme and becomes a mechanic: free RAM is your health bar, and every process that is still alive anywhere in the server is holding memory away from you. Walk away from a room without clearing it and it keeps costing you for the rest of the run. Kill a process and its memory comes straight back, which means killing is healing — the only way to breathe is to clean the machine. Getting hit leaks memory instead, and leaks do not come back on their own; you have to find a green free() drop. Your weapons are shell commands you pick up as you explore: kill -9 is your sword, nice drops every process to a crawl, sudo gives you root and double damage for eight seconds, and rm -rf deletes the junk blocks clogging a room and gives you the disk space back. Junk fills a DISK bar, and a full disk means you cannot pick up the keys, so knowing when to clean up is part of the route. Two keys gate the way — sudoers hidden in /var/log and vmlinuz walled inside /proc — and at the end of it all the Kernel Panic is waiting, forking children while you try to bring it down. Four difficulties from Kid to Hard, a full in-game how-to, a filesystem map you can open any time, keyboard and touch controls, and English and Hebrew with full right-to-left support. Free, no download, no signup, instant play in the browser on phone, tablet and desktop.
